October in Vancouver is one of the busiest months of the year. A film festival takes over downtown, the Lower Mainland’s pumpkin patches and corn mazes open, Halloween attractions light up after dark, arena tours roll through BC Place and Rogers Arena, and the leaves turn across Stanley Park and the North Shore. This guide covers what is actually happening in Vancouver in October 2026, with dates, venues and what to expect at each event. Details come from official event pages and local listings as of September 29, 2026, so check the linked organizer before you buy tickets or drive out.
Two changes are worth knowing before you plan. Canadian Thanksgiving falls on Monday, October 12, so the long weekend is October 10 to 12. And the Stanley Park Ghost Train is not running this year, but a brand new night walk called Astra Lumina opens in the same part of the park on October 22.

Vancouver International Film Festival (October 1 to 11)
The 45th Vancouver International Film Festival kicks off October 1 and runs through October 11, with more than 160 feature films, around 85 shorts, live music pairings and talks spread across screens in downtown Vancouver and the surrounding area. Opening night is Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy The Debut, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, at the Vancouver Playhouse, and the festival closes with Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine.
The program leans into international cinema. Expect Canadian premieres of recent festival favourites, a competitive section for emerging directors called Vanguard, and a strong slate of films from British Columbia, including local documentaries and Indigenous cinema. Regular screenings are priced in the high teens to low twenties, and passes and ticket packs exist for people planning several films. Popular screenings sell out, so book early through the official VIFF site.

Other options include Lost Souls of Gastown ghost walking tours, the Haunting of Vancouver film tour, Cougar Creek’s House of Horrors in Surrey, Reapers Maze of Terror in Chilliwack and the Alouette Cemetery display in Maple Ridge. For kids, the Vancouver Aquarium runs seasonal fall programming and most pumpkin patches offer daytime, not scary, Halloween fun. See our Top 25 Things to Do in Fall in Vancouver guide for more.
Astra Lumina in Stanley Park (Opens October 22)
The newest thing on the October calendar is Astra Lumina, a self guided outdoor night walk from Moment Factory, the Montreal studio behind Vallea Lumina in Whistler. It makes its Canadian debut in Stanley Park on October 22 for a limited run, at the Stanley Park Railway site on Pipeline Road.
The walk follows a lit path through nine themed zones of giant light installations, projections and soundscapes, telling the story of stars that descend to earth and return to the sky. It takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes, is suitable for all ages, and uses timed entry, so book a slot in advance. Because the stroll is outdoors and runs in the evening, dress for cool, damp weather. It is a good pairing with a walk along the seawall earlier in the day, and read our Stanley Park guide for the rest of the park.
Vancouver Writers Fest (October 18 to 25)
The Vancouver Writers Fest returns to Granville Island and venues around the Lower Mainland for eight days this year, one day longer than usual. More than 150 local and international authors appear across over 90 events, including a special evening with novelist Barbara Kingsolver on opening day. This year’s themes are Read, Resist, Repair, Renew and Rejoice, and the program covers fiction, memoir, climate writing and youth events for school groups.
Standard adult events are typically priced in the high twenties, with some events free. Granville Island is easy to combine with lunch at the Public Market.

Diwali Fest, the Lower Mainland’s largest free South Asian arts festival, starts its season with community events in late October, then holds free shows in Surrey on November 1 and at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver on November 7. Check diwalifest.ca for the current schedule.
Fall Colour, Salmon and Outdoor Things to Do

Fall foliage in Vancouver typically peaks from mid October into early November, with VanDusen often at its best in late October. The most reliable walks are the Seawall in Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, and Trout Lake. On the North Shore, the free suspension bridge at Lynn Canyon Park is a quieter alternative to Capilano.

October is also salmon season. Chinook and coho return to the Capilano River Hatchery, where underwater viewing windows let you watch fish climb the ladder even in the rain. It sits just up the road from the suspension bridge, so it pairs well with Canyon Frights. Coquitlam’s Hoy Creek Hatchery and Kanaka Creek in Maple Ridge are other good spots.

More trail ideas are in our best fall hikes in Vancouver and best Vancouver autumn places pages.
